We appreciate that this has been highly frustrating for customers, partly due to the length of time it has taken to resolve the issue, and because of the limited information that Allen & Heath has been able to impart. We are continuing to explore these issues with Apple and will release further updates as they become available, but in the interim we can offer a Xone:DB2 v2.2.6 BETA release which improves the audio reliability with USB3.0 and Apple hardware and resolves a MIDI issue specific to certain Retina Macs. The updated Xone:DB2 BETA Driver and Audio Firmware release for Apple OS X is now available online for download.

Yup, you just 'plug it in' on a Mac. A couple of caveats: 1. Use the USB port furthest away from the screen (the 'right' one if looking at the laptops left side). The other USB port has issues with audio devices (even on the brand new macbook pros apparently). Basically, if you touch the touchpad you'll get clicks and pops and have all sorts of problems with audio devices on that port (it's bus is shared with other Macbook internal components) On my Macbook (white), the 3D won't even come up on the other port, although it DOES work on that port if a hub is used.
The Xone installer on the CD sucks. You can find the config utility for Mac on it and just drag it to your applications folder (for setting up the soundcard and such). I assume you already have the full version of Ableton, so no need to install Lite. The Ableton templates that A+H provides are worthless. Really too bad, because a nice printed template would have been great.
But alas, they only mapped the left side of the mixer, and in a very stupid useless way. I find I keep remapping things, and it's really easy to remember the mapping after a few uses, so I still don't have nice printed covers for mine yet. For a LOT more information, head over to and create an account. Then check out this thread: You'll probably be confused at first, but read through the description of the template and download it and give it a try. It's just an.als file, so no harm to try it out. Gives you a lot of examples of things you can map and do with the 3D (navigation, etc).
I ended up using this template with some modifications for how I like to mix. This is an 'in the box' template, meaning all your mixing is done using midi controls on the sides of the mixer mapped to the software. You can also route individual channels from ableton to channels on the mixer portion of the 3D, and mix with that (the channel faders, eq's, etc.). Of course that limits you to 3 channels. Oh, one more thing about that template: It has the crossfader mapped.
I spent like 30 minutes trying to figure out why I wasn't getting any sound from two of my channels. Duh (I never use the crossfader, didn't even think to check it). Ryan, Awesome recs, just what I needed. I called Ableton tech support and they directed me to a small tutorial for setting Ableton with the Xone 3d using a Mac. But the MIDI controls didn't work.with my MBP (has 3 x USB) I moved it from the left side which only has one USB to the farthest one on the right side and that solved it!

I ran a few tests to confirm it wasn't a one time deal. Only thing is, everytime I turn off the Xone both Live and the Mac revert back to default settings and I need to change them back when turning the xone on. Ryan, Awesome recs, just what I needed. Only thing is, everytime I turn off the Xone both Live and the Mac revert back to default settings and I need to change them back when turning the xone on. My issue is that: 1.
I don't like mixing in ableton. Meaning, using MIDI control. There's too much latency, and the fader curves aren't DJ friendly. The eq's are also very, very touchy (yes, I've played with all the range settings). Plus, the 3D doesn't have a setup for 3 band eq on the midi portion. I have my mids over on the other side, poorly designed. The alternative is mixing in the 92 portion of the 3D, and using the MIDI control for everything else.
I was pretty happy with this, but it limits you to 3 channels (the sound card only has 6 outs). Use one for cue/preview, and you are down to 2 to play with.
I tried using an aggregate device to get an extra channel, and it was very, very flaky. So really what I want to to is have a big sound card like an Ultralite, and route ableton into a DJ mixer. Then have controls for triggering clips and navigation and all that. I'm thinking the 3D isn't for me. Seriously considering a Rane 2016. Classic rotary mixer, super solid with a huge amount of inputs. Im not so sure about the latency, i have mine down to 6ms, But then im on a MBP C2D, When DJing i play through a dj mixer - whatever is there where i play, and ill use the mixer for eq adjustment and thats about it.
I come from a very pro-sound & engineering background as opposed to a dj one so i like to keep my setup based around that, which is using loads of faders From DJ prespective - only being able to come out to your mixer in 2 channels, whats the point - you might as well mix on CDJ's or vinyl, so i share your view entirely. Take a look at the M-Audio Firewire 410 for something a bit cheaper. I would personally go for the ultralite though.
